A few notes about food specific to North Carolina:
- Southerners always
offer a visitor something to drink the minute the guest arrives.
Just remember: in the south there is really no pop, just soda,
but that's really a “Coke” or
SWEET TEA (which is a mixture of hot water and a large quantity
of sugar.)
- If someone invites you to a pig pickin', understand that you
are being invited to an outdoor picnic that will include in the
food selection fire roasted pork. It is a very popular part of
regional entertaining.
- Remember “dinnertime'
is at noon and evenings are for 'supper.'
- There is an affinity for Hot Sauce in the Triangle area cuisine.
Some folks believe that it is a food group.
- Barbeque sauce is taken very seriously in this
region. In the Raleigh area, and eastward, you can find the eastern
vinegar-based barbeque and in the west, a ketchup-based barbeque.
The vinegar based sauce is a favorite of natives in the area.
- Finally, if you enjoy cocktails, know two important details:
1. Mint Juleps are made with bourbon, sugar, water mashed mint
and ice. 2. 'Moonshine' is home-brewed whiskey and occasionally
appears at a social gathering.
